About me
Hi, I’m Jason Hooper, a UX writer based in Portland, Oregon. Having grown up on the East Coast, the romance of the West set me on a journey to explore the country.
Since then I’ve travelled the world and lived a wild life.
My family recently relocated from the deserts of Southern California to the lush landscape of the Pacific Northwest. Now I’m happy to be home going on dates with my wife and exploringing with my son.
My career so far
I’m a freelance UX writer that works with creative agencies on a variety of projects. From corporate websites to advertising, I provide UX writing and SEO techniques, help streamline CMS and develop style guides that integrate into existing design systems. I do well with stakeholder management and love working as a team.
Before UX Writing
I’ve always been the bridge. When two people are missing each other in a conversation I pick up on what the person is trying to communicate and translate it to the listener. It’s a role I’ve played my entire life.
I worked for 15 years on action units of Hollywood blockbusters including Fast & Furious, Black Panther and The Avengers. On locations like the jungles of Thailand or the streets of Busan, South Korea I would instruct local, non-native English-speaking crew on how to use complex electronics. If you’ve seen those movies, you know it was often in high-pressure situations like urban car chases and exploding minefields.
To me this is the essence of UX writing: taking complex concepts and translating them into simple, joyful language.
My time in film also gave me experience managing stakeholders in world-class directors, cinematographers and talent.
I also freelanced with a multi media production company in Portland, OR. I took on many roles including: producer, music video director, camera operator and drone operator. My nickname with one client was “The Leatherman” because I tackled any job that needed to be done. I interacted with clients on all levels, wrote copy and had my first taste of UX writing, SEO and CMS.
Previously I worked as a Technical Writer & AV Manager with a contractor that provided battlefield medical classes to the US military. My role included creating instruction manuals on setting up the audiovisual equipment for different learning environments, creating a style guide for instructor slide presentations and manuals translating battlefield medical techniques for non-medical personnel.
Other work experience includes:
Being playfully insulted by a Beatle
Helping save a life on a Northern Minnesota roadside
Telling ghost stories on a schooner off the coast of Maine
I’ve had amazing adventures with all kinds of people.
I bring the essence of all of these experiences to my work as a UX writer.
